
Committee: First Committee Topic: Situation in the Spratly Islands Submitted by: the Republic of the Philippines 1 Cognizant of the situation in the Spratly Islands, 2 Recognizing the claims already made on various parts of the Spratly 3 Islands as integral parts of those nations that hold those claims, 4 Supporting the free access and exploration of the bodies of water 5 surrounding the islands, 6 1) Recognizes the claims on the Spratly Islands by Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines: 7 a. nations whose capital is 2500 kilometers from the Spratly Islands are 8 the exclusive nations that can and have valid and legal claims to the 9 islands 10 b. border disputes by these nations in the Spratly Islands shall, but 11 not limited to, be settled in the ASEAN with ASEAN rulings taking more 12 of a precedence and original jurisdiction 13 c. nations that establishes settlements outside their claims (military 14 structures, unauthorized commercial structures, unauthorized civilians) 15 are considered violators of the principles of Chapter VII of the UN 16 charter 17 d. violations of the UN charter shall result in actions deemed 18 reasonable and necessary through international consultation and 19 clarification to denounce and reverse aggressive policies; 20 2) Supports the free access of the bodies of water surrounding the Spratly Islands: 21 a. military operations in this area shall not obstruct trade routes, 22 exploration and commercial use of the sea 23 b. 2 kilometers surrounding claimed islands are considered part of that 24 island 25 c. outside these 2 kilometers shall be subjected to free access for 26 exploration, navigation and commercial use of the sea 27 d. the aerospace surrounding the Spratly Islands shall be free for 28 exploration, navigation and commercial use.
