
Committee: First Committee Topic: Situation in the Spratly Islands Submitted by: The Republic of the Philippines 1 Cognizant of the situation in the Spratly Islands, 2 Recognizing the claims already made on various parts of the Spratly 3 Islands as integral parts of those nations that hold those claims, 4 Supporting the free access and exploration of the bodies of water 5 surrounding the islands, 6 1) Recommends the establishment of the Conference Concerning the Final 7 Status of the Spratly Islands: 8 a. conference to be held in Tokyo, Japan with chairman of the ASEAN 9 acting as the chairperson for the conference 10 b. designates Sweden, India, Russian Federation, Japan and Australia 11 as mediators of the situation 12 c. all ASEAN members will attend along with China in the Conference 13 Concerning the Final Status of the Spratly Islands 14 d. all past and current GA and Security Council Resolutions shall be 15 considered in determining the final status of the Spratly Islands 16 e. the UN charter and the international law of the sea shall be 17 considered in determining the final status of the Spratly Islands 18 f. conference shall commence at the 9th of June 1997; 19 2) Supports the free access of the bodies of water surrounding the Spratly Islands: 20 a. military operations in this area shall not obstruct trade routes, 21 exploration and commercial use of the sea 22 c. outside these 2 kilometers shall be subjected to free access for 23 exploration, navigation and commercial use of the sea 24 d. the aerospace surrounding the Spratly Islands shall be free for 25 exploration, navigation and commercial use; 26 3) Urges the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the Spratly 27 Islands till the final status of Spratly Islands are determined: 28 a. restriction of all military, naval and air operations by any nation 29 in the Spratly Islands.
