SUBJECT: The Situation in Lebanon
SPONSORED BY: Egypt

Gravely concerned at the situation in Lebanon,
Taking into consideration past UN resolutions calling for the immediate and
unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanon,
Noting that Israel has ignored these resolutions in defiance of the
internaitonal community,

1. Recognizes the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon;
2. Demands the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from
Lebanon;
3. Calls upon Israel to cease its training of the South Lebanese Army (SLA)
and providing equipment to this organization;
4. Asks the UN Commission on Human Rights to investigate the alleged human
rights abuses committed by both Israel and Lebanon and to,
     a. report to the General Assembly the situaiton of human rights in
Lebanon by May 1 1998;
5. Deplores the occupation of Lebanese territory by Israel;
6. Decides accordingly to improve the living conditions of the Lebanese people
suffering under Israeli occupation by,
     a. providing assistance to families who lost their sources of income due
to Israeli army attacks and assassinations,
     b. providing housing to individuals and families whose homes were bombed,
damaged, confiscated, or destroyed by the Israeli army,
     c. providing low cost medical care,
     d. providing educational assistance to families in need;
7. Endorses the extension of the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon
(UNIFIL) until June 31, 1998;
8. Decides to be actively seized of the matter.
