Welcome Message
"You must be the change
you wish to see in the world." When Indian political visionary
Mahatma Gandhi spoke these words, I doubt very much that he envisioned a future
United Nations OnLine - an organization above the realm of physical space that
exists solely on a cyberplane, with individuals the world over uniting to solve
pertinent problems.
And yet, despite Gandhi's human inability to see the
future, his words are perhaps more relevant today to this community than ever
before. Those of us who gather here in this General Assembly have a unique and
marvellous opportunity - to shape the world before such a time as our elders
officially allocate us the responsibility. With new resources such as the
Internet to bind the global village together and give us these fantastic
chances, we must be the change that we wish to see in the world. We need to be
today's visionaries and tomorrow's great leaders. For in the not too distant
future, the divergent solutions that we develop today will be official policy,
directly affecting countless millions.
I am tremendously excited about
the possibilities that lie ahead for this General Assembly and for the
international youth movement in general. We, like never before, can have a
fundamental impact on our global brothers and sisters. We can change the
world.
Please join me on this extraordinary journey to tomorrow here in
the UNOL General Assembly.
In peace and goodwill,
Ian Beacock
