I have been reading the discussions on the Thai ban
on homosexual-teachers, and I am reminded by the furor
caused by the declaration of the Philippine Armed
Forces that homosexuals have no place in the military.
I think that in the context of the Thai ban, we should
all be minded of the principle in international law
that no employment opportunity should discriminate on
the basis of sexual orientation of the applicant. While
I concede that the sexual preference of a person might
affect the effectivity of a soldier, I think that one's
homosexuality cannot have any direct and logical relation
to one's application to the teaching profession.
With all due respect to those who might disagree with me,
I submit that this issue is properly an issue for the
UN in light of its implications to international human rights
law.
I remain.
